Nikoi & Cempedak are two private islands located in Indonesia’s picturesque Riau archipelego. Renowned for their simple luxury and sustainability ethos, conservation and consideration of environmental issues have been a priority in the development of the islands. In line with expanded media priorities and increased online booking requirements in recent years, there was a need to rethink how both brands approach their digital experience in an increasingly AI mediated world.

The digital presence for Nikoi & Cempedak was crafted as an extension of their island philosophies: places where barefoot luxury and secluded idyll collide. Each site shapes space for layered storytelling that reflects how these islands began as personal ideas and matured into distinct experiences rooted in curiosity and care. Visitors to the sites should feel the same invitation to linger and explore that guests feel stepping off a boat onto sun-warmed sand.

To honour Cempedak’s adults-only ethos, the visual design leans into a softer, more restrained palette drawn from its natural surroundings. Photography, gentle motion, and tactile typography are given generous breathing room, allowing the experience to unfold with composed confidence as opposed to urgency. Muted tones and considered spacing reflect a sense of privacy and calm, inviting users to linger, scroll slowly, and discover an island that speaks through subtlety.

In contrast to Cempedak, Nikoi takes on a slightly more playful approach. Hand drawn icons representative of corals, shells and other elements on the island introduce a sense of whimsy that echoes the joy of stepping onto its shores. Though invisible, layout placement is guided by a custom-built grid based system that prioritises logic and order, guiding users strategically down the site.

A core pillar of both Nikoi and Cempedak is a commitment to the environment and local communities. This is foregrounded in the site experience through editorial features that articulate how sustainable practices shape everything from architecture to community engagement. By weaving responsible tourism and cultural care into the narrative fabric of the sites, we ensured that ethical values remain a guiding principle resonating with conscious travellers, inviting all into a shared journey of stewardship.
